old town square prague (staromĕstské námĕsti)
Located in Prague, Old Town Square (Staromĕstské Námĕsti) is a astrological clock where on the hour the clock it will have a display. Tourists from all over the world will wait for this great display. For many people this clock will display years of history and for others it will lead them to their futures. When the bells ring the tower will open two windows and Jesus appears together with his 12 disciples. Even though the show only lasts for 20 seconds the tourists wait anxiously. The presentations ends when the rooster crows.
The clock that is located in the heart of the Old Town is about 15 centuries old. Professor Hanus of Charles University was who produced it. His objective/aim in building this clock was to send peole a message linked to the city of Kutna Hora where the Bones Church is located. The message he wanted to send was “one day everyone is going to return back to where they came from, reunite with soil and rest their souls.”
As soon as the clock was complete he became one of the world’s famous and well known men. Professor Hanus name became more well known in Prague than the Kings as people from around the world would travel to Prague to see the clock. Soon after Professor Hanus was offerred and requested that he build other ????? of this nature. As time past the King heard of all the offers made to Professor Hanus and to stop the Professor from building this clock anywhere else in the world he blinded him. The blind Professor led himself to the mechanisim of the clock and committed suicide. But really his aim was to destroy the clock to seek his revenge. The clock did not operating for 50 years after his death, but another professor revived it.
Professor Hanus’s clock shows the positions of the sun, the world and the moon it is an astronomical clock. The clocks display has numbers that is in Hebrew. Professor Hanus had built the clock in a well populated Jewis community. He did this in a manner as to not downgrade the community as whole due to seperation of racial discrimination.
The clock is surrounded with 4 sculptures. These sculptures show people what not to do in life. From the left the first sculpture holds a mirror in his hand which represents “somone who loves himself” symbols a selfish person. Second from the left holds a bag full of gold which represents sordidness. The one next to him being the thrid in line is a skelton which symbolises “a loss of will to live”. The last sculpture holds a mandolin sort of a musical instrument which looks like a Turkish man symbolising “a man who is fasinated by night life and entertainment”. In summing up these sculptures they represnt someone who loves themselves, sordidness, a loss of will to live and to lead a debauch life. These were ways he how he expressed ways in not to lead one’s life. These sculptures in a scientific, justice, astonimical and a educational manner teach and express to us how not to lead our lives.
The clock is a must see sculpture as the view surronding it is just indescribable.
